Why Hospitality Brands Need PR in 2027

The way travelers choose where to stay has changed significantly over the past year. Guests now ask AI assistants for recommendations, and book with brands they already trust. In 2027, PR is a critical line item. It’s the marketing channel that decides whether your property shows up at all.

1. AI is fast becoming the new travel agent.

AI answers are largely built from earned media. Muck Rack's analysis of 25+ million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini found earned media drives 84% of AI citations, while paid and advertorial content accounts for just 0.3%.

That changes the math. You can't buy your way into an AI recommendation. You earn it through coverage in the travel, lifestyle and business outlets these models - and their readers - trust.

Recency matters too. More than half of journalism citations come from articles published in the past 12 months, and citation volume drops sharply after six months. A feature from 2023 won't carry you in 2027. A steady drumbeat of fresh coverage will.

2. Travelers trust editors more than ads

A hotel stay is a high-consideration purchase. Guests are spending real money on an anniversary, a family trip or an escape, and they want proof before they commit. A Condé Nast Traveler mention or a local food writer's rave does what a banner ad can't: it lends credibility you didn't pay for.

The gap is wide. In a 2026 study, 82% of consumers said an editorial feature increased their trust in a company, versus 24% for a paid ad in the same publication and 31% for a social ad.

One media placement also keeps working after it publishes. It becomes website proof, sales-deck ammunition, a social post and a line in the next award nomination.

3. Direct bookings = higher margins

OTAs are a powerful distribution tool, and can be an expensive one with some commissions reaching 20%.

PR feeds the direct channel. When a traveler reads about your property in a trusted outlet, they search for you by name, not by "hotels near downtown." Branded search lands on your website and your booking engine, not a comparison grid.

4. Amenities alone don’t sell bookings. Stories do.

In a sea of "luxury" and "curated," story is the differentiator. Many properties promise the same things - elevated design, locally inspired cuisines, wellness amenities, etc.

What isn't the same is the story: the GM, the chef, the guests and their stories. PR tells those stories to the writers, podcasters and creators who shape where people want to go next.

That's how a property becomes a destination in its own right, not just a place to sleep near one.

In 2027, the hotels that win won't just have the best rooms, they'll have the best-told stories. PR is how you get there. Let's talk about what that looks like for your property. Email us at ignite@thesparkteam.com.
